Recasting shadows

16 February – 12 June 2024, solo exhibition at Melton Library and Learning Hub

In Recasting Shadows, Kate Robinson delves into the intricacies of her own family's history, where stories are woven from fragments of memories, gossip between sisters, and the resonance of photographs stored in shoeboxes. These narratives, though constructed, persist, and shape us, passing down through generations to become an indelible part of our identity.

At the heart of the exhibition lies the poignant tale of displacement from Iran and the unfulfilled dreams that linger in the collective consciousness. Robinson is inspired by a captivating collection of pre-1979 Iran photographs, generously shared by her aunt Mehri. These family portraits serve as a key to unravelling the artist's personal journey in understanding what it truly means to be Persian.

A narrative unfolds — one marked by the poignant longing for a home that no longer exists. Robinson captures the essence of her family's collective sentiment, those who have left Iran, and their enduring yearning for a place forever changed. Through her art, she invites us to reflect on our own family histories and the ways in which they resonate within us, shaping our sense of self and belonging.

Kate Robinson's exhibition is a compelling testament to the power of visual storytelling, inviting us to ponder the threads that connect us to our roots and the shared yearnings that transcend time and place.
